This I Believe

My extended family recently held an FHE where we listened to a few essays from the NPR "This I Believe" series. After, we each shared a few things we believed. I thought it might be fun for us to share here on Tales.

Here are a few of mine:

I believe in traveling to new places, meeting new people, and learning about different cultures.

I believe in service.

I believe in the power of laughter and having fun.

What do you believe? Feel free to expound on of your beliefs.

  • I believe that money spent on creating memories with your loved ones goes much further than money spent on material goods & possessions.

  • Melissa,

I just started listening to this NPR broadcast during my cleaning. Here are some of the big beliefs that I feel like help shape the way I live (beyond my core religious beliefs).

I believe in eating good food (and not just the healthy stuff).

I believe in getting dirty (not in that way all you sickos) and being connected with the nature.

I believe the world is full of good people (even though the media would have us think otherwise).

  • Love this post Melissa.

I believe in praying for opportunities to serve...and then following up on those promptings to do so.

    I believe in date night.

I believe in taking lots of pictures and videos - it's all worth capturing with kids.

I believe in the power of chocolate.

I believe that a good night sleep can make most things OK again.

I believe that we can do anything if we are willing to work hard and keep trying.

  • What a great idea for FHE! The few times I caught this segment on NPR I LOVED it...I'll have to see if I can go back and download the rest. Here are a couple of mine:

I believe that you don't always choose what happens to you, but you do choose how to be affected by it.

I believe that you can't read too many books or take too many classes.

I believe that the world would be a better place if everyone would get rid of their car.

I believe that giving your time and money to others will make you feel wealthy and powerful.

I believe that friends come and go but sisters are forever.

  • I believe in never going to bed upset at your spouse.
    I believe in second chances.
I believe in the power of smiles.
I believe life is what we make of it (we can't control what we are given at time but we can control how we react.)
I believe thank you is a word that isn't used enough.

  • I believe that change makes us vibrantly alive. Look for change in yourself, your environment, your occupation. Life is embracing change.

I believe that an "I love you" from a son or daughter can bring a hope, love, and happiness to a forlorn heart.

I believe that going to bed angry is one of the most brilliant things my husband insists on. In the dark confusion of night, thoughts and words can be dangerous. But in the light of the morning, anger is forgotten and all is forgiven.

  • What a great NPR series! My favorite essay of all time is this one about the power of failure: http://tinyurl.com/2mgeku

I've often thought I would like to write an essay for that series, but I haven't figured out yet what I want to say...

  • I believe that obedience = blessings

    I believe in Disneyland

I believe putting on that outfit, those heels and that lipstick can make you feel better

    I believe PMS is REAL

I believe in the miracle of forgiveness

  • I believe that Larry Flynt is an evil, perverted man, despite being warmly interviewed on NPR as a First Amendment savior, to discuss his photos of female genitalia.

I believe that a rattlesnake is a rattlesnake and that it is better to preemptively kill the sucker before he bites your child. I believe that all the praying and fasting in the world will not rob an evil creature of its free agency while it is left to roam in your backyard.

I believe that if your political talking points are the same ones used by Al Qaeda, you must be on their side.

I believe that God is in charge of this earth and that all the factories and SUVs in the world are still not powerful enough to destroy His creation.

I believe in “global warming”… and in global cooling. I believe the earth’s atmosphere warms and cools in cycles, that this is normal, and that the disintegration of the family is a much bigger problem.

I believe that people of all races, religions, etc. can be smart, happy and successful and that it is condescending to say that such-and-such minority group is so incapable of achievement that we need to lower our expectations of them and offer opportunities based on their race instead of performance.

I believe that Celine Dion’s nose is wider than her waist.

I believe that criminals will never obey gun laws even if we make a hundred more. I believe that robbing good people of their right to carry firearms will make it harder to defend their families from intruders, thieves and murderers.

I believe that decent Greek food does not exist in Utah.

I believe that too many women focus on shopping and don’t think very deeply. I believe that too many men have facial hair.

I believe that sappy does not equal meaningful.

And... I believe that the overly enthusiastic kids on Barney are annoying.
