What the CRUD is in Luvs Diapers?!

I recently switched to Luvs diapers for my 18-month old so I could save a buck or two. Luvs boasts guaranteed leak protection, so it seemed a good buy. Yeah, no liquid leaks out, but yesterday his diaper started hemorrhaging little balls of gel all over the floor!

Of course the liquid in these gel-balls is urine. This gel is supposed to stay inside the diaper, holding the moisture away from baby's bum. But it doesn't.

So guess which is easier to clean up, a urine-soaked pair of shorts that you can toss into the wash or tiny pee-capsules all over the carpet that explode deep into the floor as soon as you try to wipe them up?!

Hideous.

  • Woah - that is disturbing. Someone bought me a package of Luvs after DS was born and I didn't have a problem with them, but I haven't used them since. YIKES! I'm guessing you're not using them anymore?!... and that you're gonna try to get your money back with that guarantee?

  • I hate Luvs.

The best cheap brand is the store brand you can get at Safeway, Albertson's and other chains. They're the same brand no matter the chain and are made by Kimberly Clark or one of those other Wisconsin paper goods companies.

  • That happened to a friend of mine with Huggies. Gross, huh? She wrote and complained and they sent her $20+ of Huggies coupons, which she passed onto me. :) Woo! I'm still devoted to Pampers, however.

  • We never get anything but pampers. Every time we've used Luvs we get leaks galore.

  • So glad you wrote this. I have been seeing the leak free guarantee commercial and thinking about trying Luvs out (we are Pampers peeps). Never mind.
Def get your money back. Maybe send Luvs some pee capsules to make the point!

  • We go for huggies and just leave it at that. Easier than trying all the many brands. I like the fit and they seem to keep the right stuff inside. I have noticed the gell stuff creep out if I forget to change an active toddler all day...my own fault!! Yuck!

  • I started with Pampers and haven't strayed. WE've never had any problems with that brand.

That is a gross problem, little pee filled capsules everywhere...

  • julie r-a-h, ironic that they would sent 20 coupons for the brand being complained about, I would think it revolutionary customer service if they gathered 20 dollars from the other competitors and gave the unsatisfied customer their blessing.
squiddy and katie, begs the question....how often should a diaper be changed? when happy nanny sat for me, I am sure she changed baby every hour, I usually do it around the sleeping schedule: wake up, before or after both naps and at bed, and of course when their is poop or when I am about to hand her off to someone. I have only experienced those beads on rare occasions, and more often with pampers than huggies. I use huggies b/c I can get them at costco

  • Little pee capsules. Gross. Those things should not come out.

I am totally a store brand person. Walmart and Target have the best store brands. While they don't keep baby's bottom as dry as some of the other brands, I've never had problems with leaking (an occasional poop explosion, but what diapers don't do that?). I actually attribute using the cheap diapers to googie's early potty training, cause she could feel when she was wet.

  • So other brands have the capsules, too... I've had liquid leaks with Huggies and never a problem with Pampers. Pampers have nice pictures and fit nicely, at least on my boy. I've also used the WalMart brand and never had probs. They're just not as cute.

As far as how often to change a baby? Good question! I try to check within an hour after he's had something to drink, or after meals, before naps, outings, etc. as Kage mentioned. I feel for parents who have to worry about diaper rash and change more often, that's not fun.

  • We're Huggies folks since ds#1. Everything else gave him a rash, so we just stuck with them through #2. Thankfully he didn't have the same sesitive bum.
That stuff is in more than just diapers. I went floating down a river after having #1 and discovered that my nursing pads could absorb a LOT more than I thought

  • Well, I have only been a mother for 4.5 weeks, but have been through the diaper wars. Hate Luvs. The tabs are so small - how do they expect those to stay on and keep stuff in?? Pampers/Huggies - I haven't really had a problem with. The Pampers Swaddlers for Newborns seem to sort of stick to his butt and he has diaper rash with these more than others.
Target - Love them. Work great, not quite as stretchy as the other brands but work great at keeping the stuff in.
Little guy is still in newborns (he was 5 lbs 5 oz when born) but when he switches to 1s I will most likely buy Target or Huggies (at Sam's Club).

I have some Luvs laying around that were given to me. Can I take them to Target or somewhere without a recipt????

  • amy, target has pretty great customer service, worth a try.

  • I can't believe no one has mentioned Kirkland brand diapers or Sam's club's brand. They are both great and a HUGE savings off the brand names. I usually use the cheaper diapers during the day (averaging about 4 diapers a day), and then the more high quality diapers at night for those all night wearings. Saves some money. Walmart's "parents choice" are good diapers as well. Love their formula too. Oh, an anyone who does deal with diaper rash, try "triple paste" diaper rash cream, it's the bomb!!!!

  • No kidding! I hate luvs too. And AMEN to the Kirkland/Costco brand. They are AMAZING. I've tried them all. I usually stick with the Pampers Swaddlers until about 6 months and then switch over (kirland doesn't make smaller than a 2 size). Have any of you tried their wipies? They are the most amazing wipes ever. Just the right amount of moisture, textured to help get off the nasties, scent free, pre-packed in their own convenient travel packs and CHEAP. I'm hooked. I've also tried every brand of wipe and these by far the best.

  • I'm with you on the Kirkland wipes. I LOVE them. I've never tried their diapers, though. I've always just stuck w/Pampers, because of experiences like the ones mentioned here. Thanks for telling about them. I'll have to pick some up on my next Costco trip.

  • I absolutely can't stand LUVS!!! They are the ONLY diapers that I've tried that LEAK!!! (and I've tried almost every brand!) I was desperate one time when I ran out of diapers for the night and had to use some leftover LUVS! I knew that they'd leak so I had to double up the diaper on my little girl! Leakguard Guarantee my butt! We're Huggies fans all the way!!!

Something works different for everyone I guess! Our in-laws will ONLY do LUVS!!

  • I'm sorry, but I have NEVER had any problems with Luvs, even when diaper was soaking wet and weighed more than the baby. We use Wal-Mart on occasion when the store nearest us is out, but will get to the supercenter to get Luvs. Huggies sent my money back for a pack of diapers I had bought for my oldest when she was a baby. Every night, two or three times I had to change her diaper, clothes and crib bedding. Everything was soaked and she didn't get any sleep.

Luvs is our brand and we will stick with it.

  • I love LUVS! My understanding is the same company that makes Pampers makes the LUVS diapers as well. My problem has always been with Huggies. It sounds like the poor baby needs to be changed a little more often than it is. However, I'm sure the little one is potty-trained by now.

  • Same thing happened to me. We ran out of our generic diapers which work awesome, and had to get a quick replacement. The Luvs size 4 diaper was put on right before bedtime and he slept all night. Went to change him in the morning, and gel/jelly all over the place. The Luvs website says the "gel" is safe, but I doubt anyone has ever tried to find out what happens if they ingest it. Luvs SUCK!!!

  • I've been told my daughter is allergic to the little gel things in the diapers, I loved how the Pampers held in the urine for overnights but now it seems I can't use any diapers that won't leak UGHHH this is very frustrating..any ideas??
